Typical Brittany TownBrittany Towns  Brittany must surely be characterised by its quaint seaside towns and fishing villages which are credit enough to the area, but more than this, it is blessed with such fantastic jewels as St Malo with its splendid walled old town; Lorient with it's fishing port, beach and Celtic music festival; and Rennes, the regions capital with its huge Saturday market.  St Malo is our personal favourite.

Medieval VitréVitré:
Location: 30km south of Fougères via the D798 / D178 and about 30km east of Rennes via the N157.
General Info: Office du Tourisme website.  Tel no: 02 99 75 04 46. Entry to the Musée de Vitré is €4 per adult, €2.5 per child.  Open 10 AM - 6PM in peak season.
Description: Situated right on the eastern extremity of Brittany, Vitré is one of the best  preserved medieval towns in France.  The old town character is truly delightful with wooden facias to the houses, crowned by a magnificent château.
Our recommendations:  The castle is the place to head for in the centre of the old town, but try to plan to spend some time wandering the streets of the old town as well and if time allows, stop for a drink or an ice cream in one of the local cafes.  In peak season the tourist office organises guided tours at 10PM when the town is at its most romantic.  The château entry price allows entry to 3 other attractions in the locality, although they are not really child oriented.
For the children: They will enjoy browsing the shops, alternatively head for the Haute Vilaine Watersports Base to the north east of the town -  the 150ha lake offers sailing or you can cycle around the perimeter.  The view of the Nétumières, a15th century fortified manor-house, adds to the charm.

Wedding car in VitréA French wedding experience:

When visiting Vitré, we were fortunate to be there on a Saturday in mid-summer.  Un-expectedly we found ourselves in the midst of a wedding party celebrating the occasion and it was rather exuberant.  The highlight was when a party arrived at the château (which also doubles as the Hôtel de Ville) to sign the register!  The vintage wedding car is pictured right.
