Camp sites provide the cheapest way to holiday in France and can be very comfortable with excellent facilities.  You can book your French camp site through a travel company or deal direct with the camp site.  We list our favourites here . Camping is great if you are looking for entertainment, both during the day and in the evenings.  On the other hand you may not have a great deal of privacy and may be disturbed by noise from other campers.  If you have your own tent, trailer tent or caravan then there is a massive range of camping sites to choose from.  If not, don't despair, many travel companies provide mobile homes or pre-assembled tents.

Saving Money: Out of season you can get incredibly good value through travel companies.  In season you may get a better deal by dealing direct with the campsite.  Although the bigger travel operators have their own tents/mobile homes, often the site owners have their own accommodation to rent as well.

Camping with a difference

Thinking of a camping holiday this year – why not try ‘glamping’. By mixing the words glamorous and camping a new concept has emerged called  - ‘glamping’. This term has been around for a couple of years and is used to describe a somewhat more upmarket type of camping holiday - think Mongolian style yurts or tree cabins rather than the average canvas tent. In addition these are often  environmentally ‘green’ places to stay.

Yurts: Holidays in yurts can be found at www.lecamp.co.uk or www.canvaschic.com.  An alternative to B & B’s  (Chambres d’hotes)  is the Yourte and Breakfast. A google search of Yurts in France will reveal many more possibilities.

Tree cabins:  Keycamp have tree houses on 9 of their sites. Also  check out  www.montozarbres.com/cabanes.php or B & B in a tree house at www.orionbb.com near St Paul de Vence in the south of France.

Roulettes:  In addition, gipsy caravans, otherwise known by their French name as roulettes have appeared on the scene and can be hired in many parts of rural France – check out www.canvasholidays.co.uk

If you prefer camping independently or a Eurocamp style site is not for you and you really want to get away from it all check out a new guide book called “Cool Camping: France” or look on their website www.coolcamping.co.uk for information about out-of-the-way places to pitch up.
