Lac d'Artouste

Le Petit Train d'Artouste

Location: 60km south of Pau, near Gabas on the D934.

General Info: Website.  The train runs from 26th May – 30th Sept 07. In July/Aug it runs from 9.00-5.00 and until 3.00 at other times. Prices in high season for a combined cable car/train ticket are €21 and €17 with family reductions available.  Advance booking is advisable.

Description: Le Petit Train d'Artouste provides splendid views of some of the highest Pyrénéean peaks at a height of 2000m.  To reach the train you take a 10 minute cable car ride from the Lac de Fabrèges.

Our recommendations:  The train ride takes about 50 minutes and it’s then a short walk to the Lac d’Artouste (above right).  We’re told that in peak season you are only able to stay at the top for about 1 ½ hours.  There is also a chair lift up the Ours mountain that runs from 30th June – 2nd Sept. If bought with your train ticket this is €1 more.

For the children:  This is a lovely trip for the kids, if a bit popular.  Make sure you take some warm clothes in a rucksack as the weather and temperature can change suddenly at this height.
